چکیده

We present the soft X–ray spectrum of the LINER galaxy M81 from a long observation with the XMM-Newton RGS. As well as continuum emission from the active nucleus , the spectrum shows emission lines from multi temperature collisionally ionized gas. The emission lines are significantly broader than the RGS point-source spectral resolution, and in the cross dispersion direction the emission lines are detected adjacent to, as well as coincident with, the active nucleus. This implies that they originate in a region of more than an arcminute (∼ 1 kpc) spatial extent. A good fit to the whole RGS spectrum can be found using a model consisting of an absorbed power law from the active nucleus and a 3 temperature thermal plasma. Two of the thermal plasma components have temperatures of 0.18±0.04 keV and 0.64±0.04 keV, characteristic of the hot interstellar medium produced by supernovae; the combined luminosity of these two plasma components accounts for all the unresolved bulge X–ray emission seen in the Chandra observation by Tennant et al. (2001). The third component has a higher temperature (1.7 +2.1 −0.5 keV) and we propose X–ray binaries in the bulge of M81 as the most likely source of this emission.

The X-ray spectrum of NGC 7213 and the Seyfert–LINER connection

We present an XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert-LINER galaxy NGC 7213. The RGS soft X-ray spectrum is well fitted with a power law plus soft X-ray collisionally ionised thermal plasma (kT = 0.18 −0.01 keV). We confirm the presence of Fe I, XXV and XXVI Kα emission in the EPIC spectrum and set tighter constraints on their equivalent widths of 82 −13, 24 +9 −11 and 24 +10 −13 eV respectively....

The low luminosity AGN in the LINER galaxy M81: BeppoSAX discovery of highly ionized gas

The LINER nucleus of the nearby spiral galaxy M81 was pointed by BeppoSAX, which caught it at the highest (2–10) keV flux level observed so far. The LECS, MECS and PDS data, extending over (0.1–100) keV, are used to investigate the physical similarities and differences between LINERs and AGNs. The continuum is well fitted by a power law of photon index Γ ∼ 1.84, modified by little absorption du...

Further Clues to the Nature of Composite LINER/H II Galaxies

We have analyzed new, archival and published high resolution radio and X-ray observations of a sample of composite LINER/H ii galaxies known to exhibit AGN-like properties. Five of the 16 AGN candidates have milliarcsecond-scale detections and are found to display a compact, flat spectrum, high brightness temperature radio core, four of which also exhibit extended radio emission. Five of the ei...

X - ray Emission from the Prototypical LINER Galaxy NGC 1052

We examine the 0.1 to 10.0 keV X-ray spectrum of the bright nuclear LINER galaxy NGC 1052, one of two elliptical galaxies known to contain a luminous H 2 O maser. The observed 2.0 − 10.0 keV spectrum is unusually flat (photon index Γ ∼ 0.2) and best described as intrinsically power-law shaped nuclear flux that is either (1) attenuated by a complex absorber with ∼ 70% of the nuclear flux absorbe...

A Joint Mid-infrared Spectroscopic and X-ray Imaging Investigation of Liner Galaxies

We present a comprehensive comparative high resolution mid-IR spectroscopic and X-ray imaging investigation of LINERs using archival observations from the ISO-SWS and the Chandra Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer. Although the sample is heterogenous and incomplete, this is the first comprehensive study of the mid-infrared fine structure line emission of LINERs. These results have been compared ...
